Job Responsibilities:

The Associate Director, Sustaining and Quality Engineering primary responsibility is to build and lead a team of development engineers to maintain current product designs and engineering data. The objective of this leadership role is to bring together currently fragmented support areas into one streamlined function to allow the effective deployment of resources to meet the needs of the business. The incumbent will therefore need understand the goals of the business and develop the strategy for how the team will deliver as a single cohesive unit. To be effective they will need to develop the individuals within the team to meet the wide range of tasks and priorities the work-load.

  • Provide leadership and direction including development of a high-performance team, talent & succession plan development, performance management, coaching, mentoring, training, resource/business planning, standards and processes.
  • Develops direct reports, with input from the Strategic and Core Project Leaders, by agreeing specific targets and goals, providing challenging and stretching tasks and assignments and holding regular development and career planning discussions.
  • Ensures the correct mix of skills and experience is available in the team to meet business requirements.
  • Regularly reviews and evaluates effectiveness and recommends changes to improve methodologies, systems and processes to deliver the required service to the business.
  • Ensures best practice is defined, documented and adopted.
  • Identify and scope the required work. Organize and build detailed plans including schedules, resource budgets, quality and risk management plans, and verification and validation plans. Prioritize work and organize timely responses to urgent situations.
  • Manage timely investigation of Customer and Production quality issues, Root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Obsolescence, analysis of alternative manufactures, define and execute appropriate level of testing and associated change implementation.
  • Manage PCB CAD activities utilizing internal and outsource providers.
  • Manage R&D Laboratory and day to day activities of R&D technicians.
  • Creates an environment where quality, as perceived by the customer, is part of the culture and our designs.
  • Drives continuous improvement through effective utilization of group practices and processes.
  • Champions a designed for manufacture/Test/Procurement/Quality philosophy. This will include working with both development engineers, global supply chain specialists and vendors to ensure that we develop cost effective products, easy to manufacture with built in quality wherever feasible.
  • Develop, prepare and submit monthly metrics, and implement additional measures as required to monitor or improve the performance of the department and business.
  • Participate in annual CAPEX budget planning and propose new equipment solutions.
  • Interview and hire new staff as needed.
  • Administer Engineering Change process, including continuous improvements to maximize efficiency and communication effectiveness.
  • Lead product improvement projects and guide engineering team members for quality improvement, cost reduction, and performance upgrades.

    Experience
    • This role requires a wide range of knowledge and experience in a Design and Manufacturing environment. Ideally,10+ years of professional experience in Operations (with Engineering) or R&D (with Operations), with 5+ years of managerial experience in Operations or Engineering in a similar position. Experience with life safety products or medical devices a plus.
    • Managing and developing the capability of the team, in some instances team members will be located in other countries, therefore at least 2 years people management experience is required in this role.
    • Also required:
    • Management of multiple and simultaneous projects
    • Staff Management - work allocation, performance review, discipline etc.
    • Planning and defining test strategies.
    • Understanding of hardware and firmware development
    • Demonstrated leadership and communications abilities.

      Skills
      • Outstanding interpersonal and networking skills and be able to build and maintain effective working relationships across other functions .
      • Demonstrate the ability to communicate, present and influence credibly and effectively at all levels of the organization.

        Qualifications

        Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent.

        Other Requirements
        • Occasional overseas travel visiting group sites, test laboratories and suppliers - 20%
